Do Cooling Fans Actually Work?
There are mixed reviews as to whether they do or not, or whether they are even needed.

The main function of a cooling fan is to cool your Xbox down allowing you to play longer. The first Xbox models used to get hot very quickly but things have improved since then and the newer models are alot less likely to overheat. You may not necessarily need one.

To keep your Xbox cool without a fan, ideally keep it in an open area with lots of ventilation space. Don’t put it on a carpet as this will make it very hot. And only play it for 4-5 hours at a time.

It’s up to you, BUT many users have reported problems with their consoles after positioning it vertically, and their game discs being damaged as a result.

Even though Microsoft advertise it standing up the majority of the time, it states in the manual that placing your Xbox vertically can damage the discs.

There are people who have it this way without any problems. If you choose to do this, make sure it is secure and cannot topple over.
